URBANA, IL - The Prairie Green Party has endorsed Urbana resident Mike Lehman for Champaign County Board, District 9. The Champaign County Green Party Central Committee placed Lehman on the general election ballot at a special meeting held on April 6th.
Lehman, a graduate student in history at the University of Illinois, has been a resident of Champaign County for the past three decades and has been active in many community organizations. He is a grievance officer with the Graduate Employees Organization and was the coordinator of the successful Champaign County Living Wage Campaign. Lehman has also been instrumental in the work of the Independent Media Center and the WRFU radio station.
"I'm running for County Board in district 9 because I'm committed to changing the board for the better," said Lehman. "I support public stewardship of the Champaign County Nursing Home, land use policies that reduce urban sprawl, and a courthouse that doesn't just look good but also provides efficient and fair treatment that reduces the need for jails. Instead of reducing the size of the board so it continues to represent entrenched money and power, I believe we need a board that truly represents the diversity of people of Champaign County and District 9."
The other local candidates are Walter Pituc and Kostas Yfantis in District 7 and Joe Futrelle in District 8. The candidates and party members were adamant in their goal of getting Greens elected to the County Board this November.
"For the last several election cycles, support for the Green Party has been building. With a realistic opportunity to win one or more seats on the County Board, our volunteers will focus on growing our support and winning in November," said Susan Rodgers, chair of the Champaign County Green Central Committee.
In 2006, the Green Party achieved established party status in Illinois, allowing them to hold a primary, elect and appoint precinct committee persons, and slate candidates. On Sunday, the Champaign County Green Central Committee also appointed the following precinct committee persons: Tom Abram, David Beck, Trey Davis, David Johnson, Mike Lehman, Mark Mallon, Jack Scheff, and Eric Wilson.
