Despite costing Illinois tax payers hundreds of millions of dollars since its reinstatement, the death penalty has brought no added security, and attempts to eliminate the flaws have been inadequate. Although a moratorium on the death penalty in Illinois was instated in 2000, prosecutors continue to seek death sentences. The death penalty in Illinois is still in operation.
